Recovery Rhinoplasty
So you have had your surgery, your nose is packed and splinted, and you are barely awake. Time for the trip home and your recovery period. Recovery from rhinoplasty can take from ten days to three weeks and most people are able to resume normal activity after this period.Your trusted friend, relative, spouse or significant other will drive you home. You have your pain medication and have created a cozy area to spend your recovery period.
Rest and good nutrition are paramount. You can expect some bruising and a full feeling in your nose as if you had a very bad cold. Your eyes may ache. It's a good idea to have some ice packs or frozen vegetables to soothe the area. You may have some nausea from the anesthesia or swallowed blood. Have a bucket handy in case of vomiting. Eating lightly, clear broth, bland foods will help. When you are feeling better, you can gradually resume your normal eating habits. A darkened room will allow you to sleep as long as you need to. Have someone stay with you for at least twenty four hours in case of emergency. If someone can stay several days, all the better.Be sure to take your pain medication and antibiotics as the doctor has directed.
Over the next few days, you will feel better, but the bruising will increase. It will usually look much worse than it actually feels and after a week or so will subside. The ice packs also help with bruising. You will need to avoid blowing or picking at your nose. While some bleeding is normal, if it increases suddenly the doctor should be notified immediately. When you are sleeping and resting in bed, use several pillows to support your head. In general you want to avoid any activity that cause discomfort such as bending or lifting. Once the anesthesia has worn off and you are feeling better, you can take advantage of free time to listen to music, watch tv, and read, all the guilty pleasures you feel you haven't the time for in your day to day life. Enjoy it. You'll be back to work before you know it.
At the first post operative visit, your packing and splint will likely be removed. You may still feel as if you have a cold for several weeks due to congestion in the airways. Continue to avoid any strenuous activity that may cause a nose injury for eight weeks or what ever your doctor recommends. Bathing and showering is usually fine. If you have any questions concerning an activity, check with your doctor. Most people can return to work wearing makeup within three weeks.Your final results will appear in about two weeks. Minimal changes will continue to occur over the next six to twelve months. The final outcome depends on your age, skin type, and healing ability. Recovery from your rhinoplasty should be easy provided you are prepared and follow your doctors instructions.
